National guard ambushed3/26/2023 The state militias were preserved after the founding of the United States, reflecting the balance sought by the Constitution between state and federal authorities. The Guard’s birthday is December 13, 1636, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony created the colonies’ first militia regiments. These militias grew out of the English tradition of organizing citizen-soldiers to provide for the common defense. The National Guard traces its origins to the militias established by the American colonies. Most members serve in the states in which they live. Guard members commit to one weekend of training per month plus a minimum of a few weeks of service per year. ![]() Many members of the National Guard serve part-time while holding private-sector jobs. Additionally, it can serve missions overseas, which it has done more frequently in recent years. ![]() But, unlike most of the other military forces, it can also serve a domestic law enforcement role. The Guard is generally called up to respond to state-level emergencies, such as natural disasters. armed forces in that it can perform state as well as federal functions. The National Guard is unique among the U.S. Capitol, and an unprecedented number of Guard members have been deployed to secure President-Elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. In early 2021, the Guard was called on again to restore order after a mob loyal to President Donald J. An unprecedented number of Guard members deployed in 2020 to help authorities respond to natural disasters, the coronavirus pandemic, and historic anti-racism protests. Air Force. The Guard is also distinctive in that it can be controlled by both state and federal leaders, a command structure that has generated controversy in recent decades. Congress should pass into law the bill language recently put forward by Senators Feinstein and Rubio as soon as possible to create a Space National Guard to establish a total space force enterprise parallel to what has worked so well and that is fundamental to the success of the U.S. It is time to take action to do what should have been done at the stand-up of the Space Force-transfer the space forces in the Air National Guard into a Space National Guard. Finally, it would require additional costs to the Space Force for military construction, as most bases where the current Air National Guard space missions reside, are owned by the Guard, not the Space Force.Īir Force General John Hyten (Ret.), former vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and Air Force Space Command commander, and General Jay Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, have stated numerous times that the Space Force cannot accomplish its mission without the space forces currently in the Air National Guard. Moreover, any action to absorb Air National Guard force structure would deliver an immediate cost to the Air Force who would have to assume responsibilities for the non-space related tasks that space forces in the Air National Guard currently, and would continue to provide, such as security force protection to U.S. Current estimates indicate the cost for the OMB prefered transfer is over $650M, a 7-10 year capability and experience gap for loss of ready and trained space warfighters, and a need for the Space Force to petition Congress to add an additional 1000 personnel to their end-strength to replace the men and women currently serving in the Air National Guard space squadrons. The studies within the Department of the Air Force have concluded that the cost for absorbing the space forces currently in the Air National Guard into a single component organizational construct would be significant.
